This week I toured the state of the art Maersk APM Terminal in Portsmouth Virginia. Here, a ship carrying thousands of shipping containers (full of all the things we import) docks and is unloaded by (6) massive computer controlled gantry cranes. When a truck enters this facility, the RFID chip in the truck is detected and the computers operating the cranes automatically start digging out the container that the truck is there to pick up from a stack of thousands of containers. It’s impressive.
