Used Shipping Container - Pitfalls to Avoid

Used Shipping Container

Customers often ask us what they should be looking for in a Used Shipping Container.  With any Pre-Owned products, you don't want to be acquiring a previous owner's problems....used shipping containers are no exception!

Here is a helpful list of items to avoid when shopping for a used shipping container:

Rust
Shipping containers are of course constructed with steel; rust can degrade structural integrity and generally result in a poor appearance.  The last thing a shipping container owner wants is someone from a neighboring property complaining about the look of their property and its contents.  Making sure you have a container that is free of visible - and not-so-visible - rust, is essential.

Holes
These can result from the effects long-term rust, or from some sort of puncture as a result of an accident.  Obviously anything affecting the structural integrity of a shipping container is an issue to consider; also, holes can allow in water, other environmental elements, and even critters.  Holes are to be avoided!

Used Shipping Containers

The quality of used shipping containers varies based on the individual container's life history.  Often they can be purchased significantly cheaper than their original, new price.

So-called "one-trip" containers are generally referred to in the industry as being "new", for a simple reason.  Most containers are manufactured close to where Asian consumer goods factories exist, and are then used to ship consumer goods to North America and Europe.  Then some of these "one-trip" containers are sold as "new".  "Used" containers on the other hand have either had several round-trips over the seas, or they have been used in some subsequent unrelated application and have taken some punishment.

Movies On A Storage Container In Westerly, RI

Movies at the beach this summer, check out the video...

These are a couple of 40' shipping containers that the Misquamicut Business Association in Westerly RI got from us which they stacked, welded, and mounted a giant movie screen to.  They've created a drive in movie theater right in Misquamicut down at the beach.  I got there early last week to check out the pre show atmosphere.

45' Storage Container Delivery And Positioning With A Forklift

I recently delivered a massive 45' long high cube storage container to a good customer of mine.  We didn't have the 120' of necessary room to offload so we improvised. We had access to an nice CAT forklift with an 8,000lb weight capacity.  I was able to swing the back end of the container around while still on the trailer.  I then lifted the part of the container that was over the trailer.  My driver pulled out and I set it down.  We were then able to push it straight back into position.  My customer was very happy with the results.

Snow Plow Storage In A Shipping Container?

I recently purchased a couple of 20' open side storage containers and realized how great it would be to store my plow in one of these.  I'm able to drive right up to side of the container and drop the plow inside keeping it dry and secure.  Plus, I can keep my shovels, salt, and plow accessories in there also.

Check out this video I shot with Adam the other day:

Loading Logs Into A 40' High Cube Container

I got an interesting call from a gentleman in California tonight.  He exports teak from Costa Rica to India in 40' storage containers and wanted my advice on the best way to load his containers. He proceeded to give me the link to the following video on YouTube.  After watching this setup, I told him that this was the best bang for his buck that I could think of for loading a container with logs.  The guys in this video are pretty crafty.

The Process of Refurbishing A Shipping Container

This is the process by which we refurbish our storage / shipping containers. First we grind all of the loose / flaky rust off. Then we paint the container with a high quality oil based paint which has a rust inhibitor built in. Although it's not shown in the video, the roof of the container is ground, primed, and painted also.

How A Shipping / Storage Container Floor Is Constructed

I'm often asked about the flooring of the shipping containers I sell. People want to know how thick the wood flooring is which direction the cross members run, how thick the cross members are, etc. I recently took a new 20' storage container into stock that had a damaged floor. The floor of the shipping container was pushed up a bit in the back corner which prompted me to remove that section of flooring in order to re-install it properly. While doing so, I thought it would be a great opportunity to shoot some video of how they're put together.
